New Zealand name ICC Cricket World Cup squad
Batter Kane Williamson made his return to the New Zealand side as the Blackcaps announced their squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India from October 5 onwards on Sunday night.

In the pursuit to go one better than their Final appearance in 2019, New Zealand have named their 15-player group for this year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

New Zealand confirmed the group at Papatoetoe High School in Auckland on Monday, the alma mater of leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, who was named in the squad.

The 30-year-old joins skipper Kane Williamson, who was confirmed as a squad member this week after making a quicker-than-expected recovery from a ruptured ACL at the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL). Both Williamson and fast bowler Tim Southee have been named to appear at their fourth World Cup.

Following a strong run in form across the two white-ball formats, Mark Chapman has earned his spot, as well as 23-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, who claimed 3/48 against England in the first of four ODIs on Friday.

There was no room in the group for young top order batter Finn Allen, nor back-up wicket-keeper Tim Seifert, with the Black Caps opting for Tom Latham as the sole wicket-keeper in the squad. Adam Milne, who recently picked up a hamstring injury on New Zealand’s tour of England, has also missed out. New Zealand coach Gary Stead admitted he faced some tough decisions when deciding on the final squad, but believes he has got the right mix of youth and experience to take to India.

“It is always a special time to name a tournament team and I’d like to congratulate the 15 players selected today. It is a great honour to represent your country at a World Cup,” Stead said as quoted by ICC.

“From Kane and Tim heading to their fourth tournament to the guys selected for the first time, it is always a very exciting time.” “As with any squad named for an ICC tournament, there have been some tough calls and there will be some disappointed players.”

“The key for us was finding the right balance for the squad and making sure we had our bases covered for what is going to be a very competitive tournament.” The side meet England and Bangladesh in ODIs before taking on England again in a rematch of the 2019 Final in the World Cup opener on October 5.

Rain pauses match as Pakistan look to regroup
India were 147/2 at the first ball of the 24th over against Pakistan in the Super Fours match of the Asia Cup 2023 in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Sunday as rain halted play.

The match will now continue on the reserve day (Monday) with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul resuming their innings.

Rain paused the match in the 24th over. The much-needed break had given Pakistan a chance to regroup if play had resumed. However, heavy rain returned after multiple inspections and attempts by groundstaff to clear the pitch of rainwater.

The Pakistan Cricket Board said ticketholders for today’s game will be able to use them for the reserve day.

The match kicked off Sunday with Pakistan winning the toss and opting to bowl in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

“We will bowl first. I think there is a bit of moisture, we need to use that. Always, India-Pakistan is high intensity, but we will take it match to match. As a team, we are playing well, we are focused on this one,” Pakistan captain Babar Azam said at the toss.

“Looking to bat first. There will be a challenge upfront, but the way we guys batted last time around gives us confidence. Every game is important for us, but one thing at a time to focus on,” said Indian skipper Rohit Sharma.

Bangladesh opt to bowl first against Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka have set a target of 258 runs for Bangladesh in second game of Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2023 being played at Colombo on Saturday.

Sadeera Samarawickrama remained prominent with 93 runs off 72 balls while opener Pathum Nissanka made 40 and Kusal Mendis smashed fifty to help team set a challenging total for the opponent team.

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and decided to field first against the hosts.

Sri Lanka have not made any changes to their playing XI, meanwhile Bangladesh have brought in Nasum Ahmed for Afif Hossain.

Bangladesh's batting failed to impress in two of the three matches of the 50-over tournament, a precursor to the upcoming ICC World Cup in India. The Bangla Tigers take on Sri Lanka in a must-win match to keep their hopes high of reaching the final, after they went down in their Super Four opener to Pakistan.

“We will field first, no particular reason, there could be some rain around. We have one extra bowler and we will bowl first. A must-win situation, but playing against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka isn't easy. There is no room for complacency, it's a bit different to Pakistan and we'll have to adjust,” Bangladesh captain Shakib said at the toss.

Sri Lanka are playing their first match in the Super 4 after they survived a big scare against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup group stage.

“We would have batted first, it'll seam and spin a bit under lights. The rules in ODIs mean it's difficult to defend totals, but we do have class bowlers like Pathiran and Theekshana, that helped us fight back against Afghanistan. The talk is about trusting yourselves and following the process. The guys have been delivering and that's key to being a good side,” said Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka.

Bangladesh: Mohammad Naim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan (c), Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Shamim Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Nasum Ahmed

Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis (wk), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka (c), Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Matheesha Pathirana

Australia announces ICC World Cup 2023 squad
Cricket Australia (CA) on Wednesday, named a 15-member provisional squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 in India, commencing on October 5.

Pat Cummins will lead the side, however, he is currently recovering from a fractured wrist and is in a race to be fit in time for the World Cup, along with Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell and Steve Smith.

Steve Smith is also battling a wrist injury, sustained during the the Ashes, while Mitchell Starc has been dealing with groin soreness since returning from the Ashes.

Meanwhile, allrounder Glenn Maxwell was ruled out of the South Africa tour due to soreness in his ankle stemming from his previously broken leg.

However, Australia’s national selection panel chairman George Bailey is hopeful that the quartet will regain full fitness prior to the World Cup.

“All are well placed to come back online in the coming weeks and potentially for selection in the upcoming series against India,” George Bailey said.

“There are eight one-day matches still to play in South Africa and India before the final squad is due to be declared. They are followed by two World Cup practice games, which offers plenty of opportunity to continue the build for the tournament.”

Australia’s final 15-member squad is expected to be confirmed to the ICC by September 28, after the conclusion of a three-match ODI series in India.

Australia will kick off their World Cup campaign against India on October 8 in Chennai.

Asia Cup: Bangladesh opt to bat first against Afghanistan
Bangladesh thrashed Afghanistan by 89 runs in the 4th match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday.

Chasing the target of 335 runs, the Afghans lost an early wicket as Rahmanullah Gubraz departed for the pavilion for just 1 run.

But Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah's 78-run stand brought some stability to their batting but the latter was soon removed by Taskin Ahmed for 33 runs.

Ibrahim stood tall and completed his 50, but Mushfiqur Rahim's blinder behind the wickets ended his well-fought knock as he got out for 75 off 74.

Afghanistan's skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi played a captain inning scoring 51 off 60 including six boundaries but the 28-year-old fell prey to Shoriful Islam.

Rashid Khan had a special cameo, scoring 24 runs with four boundaries but his valiant display was not enough for the gigantic target set by the Bengal Tigers.

Afghanistan — who were playing their first-ever international match in Pakistan — kept on losing wickets at intervals and were soon all out for 245 runs.

Taskin picked four wickets for the winning side while Islam took three.

Earlier in the first inning, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossan Shantu shined for Bangladesh as the Tigers put a massive total of 334-5 runs on the scoreboard.

Bangladesh had lost two wickets for 63 runs but then Miraz and Shantu formed a massive 194-run partnership and put their side in a dominant position.

Miraz was retired hurt after scoring 112 off 119 while Shanto was run out for 104 off 105 balls.

Skipper Shakib Al Hasan was the third top-scorer for his side as played an excellent cameo of 32 off 18 balls.

Afghanistan will now play a must-win game against Sri Lanka on September 5 in the last group-stage match of the Asia Cup 2023.

Heath Streak
Heath Streak, former Zimbabwe captain and the nation’s all-time leading wicket-taker, has died at the age of 49 after battling liver and colon cancer.

“In the early hours of this morning, Sunday, 3 September, the greatest love of my life and the father of my beautiful children, was carried to be with the angels from his home where he wished to spend his last days surrounded by his family and closest loved ones,” his wife, Nadine Streak wrote on social media.

Streak was an outstanding fast bowler and capable batsman. He was a key member of Zimbabwe teams that were competitive against cricket’s bigger nations in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

In 2021, his cricket career ended in ignominy, however, when he was banned for eight years for breaching the International Cricket Council (ICC) anticorruption code.

It was announced in May this year that Streak was seriously ill, and it was reported in August that he had died, following a message on social media from former teammate Henry Olonga.

Streak himself was quick to assert that he was still alive, but not before numerous former teammates and opponents paid tribute to him.

He made 1,990 runs at 22.35 in Tests to stand seventh on the country’s all-time list. His highest score and only century was 127, not out against the West Indies in Harare in 2003.

Streak took 237 wickets – 104 more than his nearest rival – and scored 2,901 runs in 187 one-day internationals.

His best Test bowling performance was typical. He took six for 73 while India piled up a total of 366 on the way to a 10-wicket win in Harare in 2005.

Pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi
Pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi said bowling in partnerships was the key to rattling India’s batting in the blockbuster Asia Cup clash abandoned because of rain.

The left-arm fast bowler took four wickets, including the prize top-order dismissals of India captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as Pakistan gained a psychological edge over their great rivals, who had elected to bat first in Kandy on Saturday.

The two teams could potentially clash twice more in the Asia Cup if both reach the final, ahead of a highly anticipated 50-over World Cup clash in Ahmedabad next month.

Shaheen, who finished with 4-35, and fellow quick Haris Rauf reduced India to 66-4 before a fightback by Ishan Kishan, who made 82, and Hardik Pandya (87) lifted India to 266 all out.

New-ball-partner Naseem Shah did not get his first wicket until the 45th over but then struck twice more to wrap up the India innings in 48.5 overs.

Rain meant Pakistan were unable to bat and the points shared.

It was enough to put Pakistan into the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup and India will join them if they avoid defeat to Nepal at the same ground on Monday.

“Mickey (Arthur) always says ‘fast bowlers win you tournaments’ and we always try to bowl in partnerships,” said Shaheen of the national team director in a video chat on the Pakistan Cricket Board’s social media.

He said the role of Haris Rauf, the third member of a daunting pace attack, was “to instil fear in the opposition batsmen with pace and bouncers, while Naseem and I rely on swing”.

Shaheen set up Rohit, on 11, with two outswingers and brought the next back in to smash the off stump of the Indian captain.

Kohli was the next to go on four as he chopped on a length delivery outside the off stump from Shaheen.

“Virat is the backbone of the Indian team and getting his wicket was crucial,” said Shaheen, who was confident Pakistan could have won had the weather not intervened.

“We had the result in our hands. But overall the team performance in one innings was very good.”

Former speedster Shoaib Akhtar praised Shaheen on his opening spell.

“I don’t think Rohit is able to read or understand Shaheen at all,” Akhtar said on his official YouTube channel.

“The visual of Rohit Sharma being beaten like this was not good, he is a far better player than this,” he said.
